Enriching the Vocabulary of Primary Pupils

27 April 2010

One of the reasons why many PSLE students are unable to do well in their Reading Comprehension and Composition is their limited repertoire of vocabulary – both recognition vocabulary and recall vocabulary and their inability to choose the word or expression most appropriate to the context in speech and in writing.

‘Knowing’ a word is to be able to:

  • know how it is pronounced and spelt
  • know its meaning(s) and contexts of use
  • recognize the word –  both  in context and by itself
  • recall the word at will
  •  know what other word or words it is often used with

Keeping the needs of PSLE pupils’ needs in view, this workshop aims to familiarize teachers teaching PSLE classes with a variety of techniques in teaching vocabulary as well as help expand their pupils’ range of recognition and recall vocabulary.  Teachers will also be introduced to ways of encouraging both the correct and the creative use of words and phrases by the pupils in their composition writing.

The techniques covered will include the use of the following, with sample exercises based on each:

    • Context and Register
    • Definition
    • Dictionary
    • Class, Clines and Categories
    • Cloze
    • Connotations and Denotations
    • Synonyms & Antonyms
    • Collocations and Associated Pairs
    • Idiomatic and Literary Expressions
    • Word Formation
    • Mind Maps
