English Language Paper 1 - Workshop on Situational Writing
29 April 2010
Is Situational Writing all about writing emails? If this is so, pupils will not be sufficiently prepared to write for the different functional purposes selected for Situational Writing assessment. To do well in Situational Writing, pupils need to know the text type asked for in the writing task, the structural and linguistic features of that text type and the text form in which it is to be presented. Equally important, pupils need to know that for writing to be truly effective they must be guided by their awareness of the purpose, audience, context and culture in which they are writing.
How can teachers help their pupils do better in Situational Writing?
This workshop aims to:
Inform teachers how situational writing tasks can be designed for explicit instruction and related follow-up practice.
Help teachers understand how the elements of a given situation and its context influence the selection and organisation of meaning and language in which the text is to be written.
