Strategies in Teaching Reading Aloud

This workshop’s emphasis is on introducing to Primary School teachers effective strategies they can use when reading aloud to their students. These strategies are useful for teachers of all languages. Topics covered include:

    • Involving all students in participation during reading aloud sessions
    • Promoting comprehension and language development
    • Using thinking tasks

Focus

This is a half-day, three-hour workshop specifically aimed at the Primary level. Its emphasis is on introducing to Primary School teachers effective strategies they can use to make their reading aloud to students sessions lively and productive. Teachers in Singapore schools will find the workshop useful because it provides them with practical tips for increasing student engagement, learning and enjoyment of reading.

Approach


A practical, hands-on approach to the use of reading aloud by teachers at the Primary Level will be used. Strategies will be explained and demonstrated. At the end of the workshop, teachers will be equipped with relevant and applicable techniques for classroom teaching.

  1. Key point:

    Reading aloud is a journey not a race. Thus, the longer it takes to finish the story, the better. The book can be a tool to launch a conversation, mostly about life, and, to a lesser extent about language.

 

Trainers' Profile

    Dr George Jacobs

    Dr George Jacobs has been working in the Singapore education system since 1993 when he began an eight-year tenure at RELC, teaching courses, facilitating workshops and writing materials on the teaching of reading and other areas of language teaching. More recently, he has been a consultant for many Singapore schools, in addition to teaching courses for NIE and other teacher education institutions. He is co-author of Read Aloud Asia and many books for children.
