This workshop’s emphasis is on introducing to Primary School teachers effective strategies they can use when encouraging their students to do more silent reading. These strategies are useful for teachers of all languages. Topics covered include:

Focus
This is a half-day, three-hour workshop specifically aimed at the Primary level. Its emphasis is on introducing to Primary School teachers effective strategies they can use to promote silent reading by their students.
Teachers in Singapore schools will find the workshop useful because it provides them with practical tips for increasing the amount that their students read and enhancing their students’ enjoyment of reading.
Approach
A practical, hands-on approach to the use of extensive reading by teachers at the Primary Level will be used. Strategies will be explained and exemplified and teachers will have a chance to consider how to apply the strategies in their own teaching contexts.

Trainers' Profile
Dr George Jacobs
Dr George Jacobs has been working in the Singapore education system since 1993 when he began an eight-year tenure at RELC, teaching courses, facilitating workshops and writing materials on the teaching of reading and other areas of language instruction. More recently, he has been a consultant for many Singapore schools, in addition to teaching courses for NIE and other teacher education institutions. He is the author of books and articles on language teaching, as well as story books and assessment books for primary school students. Dr Jacob is a member of the Board of Extensive Reading Foundation - www.erfoundation.org - and a founder of the Extensive Reading website - http://extensivereading.net
