Green Energy Science Activities: Wind, Solar and Electric

15 July 2010, 9am - 5pm

For Secondary Schools' Science Teachers

Through open-ended and hands-on activities students not only learn physical science content and science methods, they also become empowered to develop their own ideas about alternative energy sources. In this workshop you will use solar cells, wind turbines, and electric generators to power model electric vehicles. Your understanding of the basic science will broaden as you apply it to solve engineering problems in small groups.

The materials used in the workshop are both inexpensive and readily available and you will be able to replicate the activities within your classroom. Teachers outside of science can use these activities to launch into learning about the economic and social issues of alternative energy.

What you will learn

          • Activities that energize learning science - build and test motor generators
          • How solar energy works and how you can incorporate solar activities in the classroom
            - build and test solar cars
          • How to use wind energy activities in the classroom - wind and test wind turbines
          • Simple ways to connect wind, solar, and electric energy learning

Dr. Ed Sobey is conducting the following workshops as well:

Speaker's Profile

    Dr Ed Sobey

Dr Ed Sobey develops hands-on, inventing activities that help kids learn science. He gives workshops on "inventing to learn" to teachers, museum staff, and the public throughout the US, in Europe and Asia, and he leads several Kids Invent! camps each summer.

Dr Ed Sobey has directed five museums, published more than a dozen books, and traveled around the world. He holds a Ph.D. in oceanography and has participated in scientific expeditions throughout the Pacific Ocean.

After directing two museums in Florida, Dr Ed Sobey was selected to be the founding director of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Along with work on exhibits and facilities, Dr Ed Sobey co-created Camp Invention. Later, while on the faculty of California State University, Fresno, he teamed with Prof Tim Stearns to create Kids Invent! Dr Ed Sobey also developed and hosted a kids television series on inventing, The Idea Factory.
